Festival Guide 2013 is here! With festival fever sweeping the nation it’s time to take stock, grab your mates and book the event of your summer. But with so many festivals on offer this year, which should you head to?

To help you out we’ve compiled our top 10 festivals along with a 2013 festival calendar including all our favourites for the season, from big to small, urban to rural, old and new and everything in between.

Whether you fancy some easy electro, have a hankering for hip hop, are passionate about pop or like to revel in good old rock n roll, we’ve got you covered.

So check out our Festival Guide 2013 and get ready to #LiveForSummer!

Do you like to rock heavy? Then Download is your festival of worship this summer. Touted as ‘the heavy metal Glastonbury’, this festival sprouts more stages and bigger crowds each year. Now in it’s second decade, Download 2013 looks bigger than ever thanks to it’s heavy weight headliners, which include Slipknot, Iron Maiden and Rammstein.

This festival needs little introduction. With hundreds of thousands missing out on this year’s bid to register for tickets, those lucky lot who managed to snag a pair have a lot to be smug and very, very excited about. For 2013 the king of festivals will see the Arctic Monkeys, Rolling Stones, Mumford and Sons and many more descent on Worthy Farm, to bathe in the sacred Glastonbury sun and/or mud.

The ‘UK’s biggest surf town fiesta’ graces Newquay’s shores for a fun-packed summer festival. Beach Break has a decent array of bands and DJs for 2013, with Aluna George, Devlin and Skream leading this line up this year. And it doesn’t stop at the music -there’s beach parties, street art, comedy and extreme sports aplenty to keep you busy on what hopefully will be a scorchio seaside weekender.

Lovers of music, bmx and skate unite this July at the Royal Bath and West Showground for the fun and games of NASS Festival 2013. NASS boasts 5 stages of dubstep, DnB, punk and rock, alongside a purpose built skate park where you can catch the BMX and skate pros. Impressive musical headliner comes in the shape of US rapper Nas, with Katy B, Andy C and Hadouken also taking to the stage.

T In The Park returns to Scotland with a brilliant international line-up that is in fact dominated by the best Scottish artists in the business. The likes of Calvin Harris, Emile Sande and Twin Atlantic dominate an impressive international line-up to show us how their fair land does it best. Beyond the main stage make sure to check out the Slam Tent, featuring some awesome house, tech and electro sets from DJs such as Maceo Plex, Maya Jane Coles and Jamie Jones.

Lovebox brings the diversity of London’s mighty music scene onto one mega weekend dancefloor that is East London’s Victoria Park. The three day urban festival will play host to an array of dance, electronica and hip hop this year, with Lil’ Kim, Azaelia Banks and Jurassic 5 taking centre stage. Mark Ronson’s Red Bull Academy is also one to watch for 2013.

For 2013 SGP asks all it’s ‘Gardeners’ to embrace the supernatural and irrational with this year’s theme of ‘Superstition’. In terms of music, Regina Spektor, Distmantle and Soulwax appear amongst a brilliant haze of acoustic, indie and dance music offerings. But it’s the unique dreamy atmosphere that tends to be the biggest draw to SGP, with it’s creative installations, theatrical performances, intellectual debates and secret sanctuaries.

Newquay town plays host to UK’s most exciting beach-life festival this summer. The Boardmasters returns to the Cornish coastline in August for a week of surf, skate, bmx and heavyweight musical headliners. Watch the pro surfers fight it out for the $25k prize or take to the water yourself, before heading to the festival site to catch The Vaccines, Basement Jaxx, Ben Howard and many more.

The stars will be shining at V Fest this year, with Beyonce and Kings of Leon expected to attract the masses in record time. Set in both Essex and Staffordshire, V brings the party to both venues across the weekend. For an alternative festival experience, check out this year’s V Style Luxury Camping, which offers fully equipped beauty rooms, spas, showers and access to the VIP hospitality area.

Saving the Bestival ’til last, this Isle of Wight event closes the summer festival season in style. Winner of the Best Major Festival 2012, this four day boutique festival takes place in the beautiful Robin Hill Country Park. Famed for it’s fancy dress, you can expect a pretty intriguing dress up theme this year. Amid the costumes, installations, poetry, roller discos and cocktail bars you can enjoy the most diverse of line-ups, with Elton John, Snoop Dog and The Flaming Lips headlining for 2013.

Surfing pro, family man and hero of British shores; there’s not much about Oli Adams that doesn’t make you want to be his best mate.

Since learning to surf at the age of 6, Oli Adams has taken the surfing scene by storm. Winning a number of prestigious titles, it’s easy to see the influence such a talent could have on the rest of the surfing community. But it’s Oli’s passion for our own home grown waves here in the UK that really wins our hearts.

Recently recording a series of 5 inspiring episodes entitled “From Here To There”, with the help of Protest, Oli has certainly got us all eager to explore British waters again. Travelling the coast of the UK and Ireland, Oli has truly showcased exactly what our quarters have to offer, and we can’t wait to get our wetsuits on!

Not only proving himself to be a great ambassador for surfing in the UK, but also as an all round top guy, we were delighted when Oli Adams agreed to answer a few questions for us here at Surfdome!

What was the response like, towards your series of ‘From Here To There’ webisodes with Protest?
Really amazing actually. People seemed to love seeing something a bit different and all I ever got was positive feedback. Vimeo even made my intro a “Staff pick” which got it out to whole new audience.

Do you think they’ve helped to gain the UK more credibility when it comes too sought after surf destinations?
I think it’s definitely opened people’s eyes internationally to how good our waves are, but I doubt it will increase the amount of Surfers coming from other countries as it’s so cold and expensive. If you consider going to Indonesia it’s tropical and cheap. But this is what appeals so much to me about our waves; you can score world class waves with no one out and that is something that is very rare around the world these days.

You have a secret, self discovered surf spot which you refer to as “beefcakes”, what is it that makes this place so special compared to others around the UK?
It’s so special because the wave itself is a proper world class wave that has it all; from mental barrels, to turns and air sections. But more than that, it has a real end of the world feel to the spot as it’s on an island with hardly any people. It breaks at the base of a massive cliff which acts as a natural amphitheatre. It’s my favourite place in the world! Heaven!!!

So if “beefcakes” was a person, who would it be?
I guess it would have to be my wife and kids as it gives me the most joy in life, and so do they.

Have you ever been in any sticky situations whilst surfing which you thought you wouldn’t make it out of?
Yeah, quite a few times. Recently I snapped my board at 6 to 10 foot in Aileens (Ireland) which is one of the heaviest waves in the world. I got 10 foot slabbing set on the head, pretty much a two wave hold down, and then had to swim against the rip, out around the peak and back to a gully with big waves breaking over semi submerged rocks at the base of some of the biggest cliffs in Europe. It took me a good half an hour wearing a 6/5/4 wetsuit and all the gear. It’s fair to say, when I finally made it to shore, I kissed the ground haha.

Describe to us your dream holiday. Where would it be? Who with? What would it entail?
It would be to Pasta point in the Maldives with my wife and kids. They have an amazing resort there, and it’s where I proposed to wife a few years ago so it holds a special place in our hearts. We would have the best time because it’s safe for the kids and has good waves for us. One day I hope.

If you could design a board which allowed you to surf and do one other thing at the same time, what would it be?
Make me pizza so it’s ready for when I get out haha.

If you had to pick a different sport to pro in, which sport would you choose?
Football for sure. I play twice a week when I’m home, but I don’t really play properly because I’m too scared to injure myself for surfing. Come on you spurs!

If you could trade places with any other person for a week, living or dead, real or fictional, who would it be?
It would be any surfer who pioneered Indonesia in the 80′s. You would have been able to surf the best waves in the world with no one out.

Oli’s most recent visual masterpiece is this little treasure bringing you the joys of Cornwall, and we couldn’t wait to share it with everyone!

If I had a penny for every time my mates and I said “Ah I wished we got that on film” whilst out riding, I’d probably have about 50p. I don’t think that really describes what I’m trying to say, but we have all missed the opportunity of documenting some magical & priceless moments.

As you’d most likely agree, filming action sports whilst actually doing it is quite honestly a pain in the ass. No one wants to sit on the sidelines with an expensive bulky camera. That’s why we’re totally stoked to have the iON cameras in stock at Surfdome!

These little bad boys pack a punch. At 130 grams and not requiring a waterproof housing, it’s the lightest Wi-Fi enabled action camera in the world. An ideal choice for any action sports enthusiast. Waterproof to 30ft, the battery will last a good 2.5 hours and the 170⁰ wide angel lens with full 1080p HD recording makes this camera the ultimate filming device.

The iON Air Pro Connect Kit is a nifty little add on which lets you completely control the iON camera from your smart phone, opening up a ton of opportunities for you to get some rad-o footage.

Lee Bartlett is known as a veritable legend in the surfing community. Surfing since he was 14 years old, entering contests since he was 17 and killing the competition (not literally) since he was 18, this seasoned surfer is now nothing short of a god to many. Still need convincing? Lee has eight English and twelve titles under his belt and has won the British Open title more times than any other surfer in national history.

Lee now uses his 28 years of surfing experience to impart his wisdom to amateur and more high profile surfers such as the English and British National Teams. When he’s not working out and leading people to certain victory like Gandalf of the waves, he can be found crafting his own boards, most recently for Toy Factory Surfboards.

Needless to say that when Lee kindly agreed to answer some of our questions, we couldn’t have been more thrilled.

You’ve achieved a lot in your time as a surfer. Can you please describe the highlight of your career so far?

For me, being selected to represent England and also the GB surf teams. Not only was it a great honour but it also allowed me to see places I would never visit like Japan and Brazil.

You’re currently coaching groms – how are you finding it?

I have attended a couple of grom coaching sessions. It’s always good to see a group of young enthusiastic surfers. They are willing to listen and learn. The hardest thing is keeping them in one place long enough to talk to them all…they’re like little Duracell bunnies!

You’ve been quoted as saying, “It’s easier to stay fit than to get fit!” Can you describe what you do on a daily basis to maintain your physique?

I’ve been lucky enough to always have been active so it feels wrong if I don’t exercise a couple times a week. The trick is to find a hobby that you enjoy and gets the blood pumping. I love surfing obviously and play basketball once a week but if it’s looking flat on the charts I will hit the gym a couple of time just to get a sweat on. You can always do something at home, be it push ups, crunches, squats… you don’t have to be a gym rat!

You worked under Eric Arakawa, the infamous board shaper, who taught you some tricks of the trade. Since then you’ve gone on to make your own, most recently with Toy Factory Surfboards. If you had all the time, money and resources at your disposal, what would be your ultimate masterpiece?

Great question! The great thing about surfing and surfboard design is that it’s constantly changing and evolving. So even if I made the perfect board today it will be out of date and would most probably be updated within a few months. All you can try to do is find a design that works and then tweak it from board to board. But saying that if someone wants to throw an obscene amount of money at me for research and development, I will keep them up dated with my progress from my luxury boat in the Mentawai’s!

You have won the British Open title more times than other British surfer in history. Do you have your eyes set on another prize or are you presently happy to roll with the tide?

Haha, I always have one eye on a prize! To win the British Open four times in a row was a great achievement for me but that was fueled by me making the final the four previous years and not winning. I find challenges in the most stupid places. After my fourth win, a magazine said I had to go some to beat Linda Sharp’s 10 British titles and that put a bee in my bonnet. It took a while but now I have 10, also in 3 years time I will go up an age group too so fingers crossed add a few more!

Name three things you couldn’t live without?

The internet, good food and sport.

Who is your surfing idol and what was it about them that made them so memorable to you?

Occy has always been one of my favourite surfers not only because he’s a goofy foot like me but his style and power was unequaled. Two years ago I was lucky enough to do a webcast with Occy and Richard “Dog” Marsh in the Azores for a 6* event. They were great fun and so down to earth. It was a bit surreal when your idol greets you at work with a coffee! I even named my dog after him.

What do you do to wind down after a hard day on the waves?

I’m an all or nothing kind of guy. I will either watch movie after movie or get online gaming, basically being a lazy slob then other times I will hit the gym, play basketball for two hours or go for a run. I love eating too!

If there’s one piece of advice you’d give to upcoming surfers out there, what would it be?

Enjoy surfing for what it is. Don’t get too caught up in getting sponsored or winning. Try not to get ahead of yourself either. No matter how good you think you are there will be a better surfer your age surfing another beach. Finally, don’t be afraid to take a few days off surfing. We all have surfs where we can’t even do a bottom turn. Have a couple of days out of the water and you will have time to reset, you will feel keen and surf better than ever. I never surf the day before a contest!

What cartoon character would you most like to be stranded on a desert island with and why?

Another great question. It would either be Eric Cartman or Stewie from Family Guy. Just for pure entertainment! Cartman would be a funny little angry person and Stewie would be plotting how to get off the island.

The third stage of 2013 ASP World Championship Tour takes place in Brazil between May 8th-19th, with elite surfers battling it out in Barra de Tijuca and Asproador in Rio de Janeiro. The Billabong Rio Pro 2013 is a very important competition for those wanting to become world surfing champions.

Kelly Slater is ready to tame the Brazilian waves. The Floridian surfer is leading by only 50 points to Mick Fanning, Taj Burrow and Adriano de Souza.

Adriano de Souza and Nat Young caused a stir at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach. Nat took the event by storm and surprised everyone by rallying all the way to the final, while the bells certainly rang across the beach for Adriano, who was the first male Brazilian to win the event.

In the women’s category, Carissa Moore (31,700 pts) and Tyler Wright (30,000 pts) are disputing the first places in the rankings. Courtney Conlogue follows with 26,900 pts, making Rio de Janeiro a close runner-up in the title race while Stephanie Gilmore (24,700 pts) needs to win to get the chance for the sixth world trophy.

Before you see them riding the waves, Red Bull’s 21Days gives you the opportunity to have a look at how Adriano and Nat are preparing for the Billabong Rio Pro with their eyes firmly set on the glory and triumph of victory.

We reckon the Rio Pro will leave us breathless with anticipation; check out Billabong Rio Pro 2012 for highlights.

As one of the UK’s leading surfers, Sophie Hellyer has fast become a role model and inspiration for thousands of young female surfers alike. Hailing from Westward Ho!, Devon, Sophie devoted her teenage years to riding waves with her father and sister. This certainly paid off as she won the English Junior Women’s Nationals, British Schools Junior Women’s Nationals and Bude Classic Women’s Open, as well as racking up a number of other prestigious titles around the UK’s coastline.

Now the poster girl for surf brand Roxy, making the front cover of Cooler magazine, and landing deals with Cushe and Lynx, Sophie has had a huge impact on the surfing world and is a fantastic ambassador, not only for female surfers, but for the entire UK surf scene.

We caught up with Sophie Hellyer to see what she makes of the Wadi Adventure Park (Dubai), travelling and…bumbags.

©Ben Jones

1. We’ve read you wouldn’t mind opening your own surf school in the future. So if you could choose anyone in the world to teach, who would it be?

Oh good question… the best days are coaching funny people who are naturally good at surfing. Maybe James Franco?!

2. Having done a fair amount of modelling you must have an idea of what your perfect photo shoot would involve, what would it be?

I’ve been on my perfect photo shoot before; I doubt I’ll ever be so lucky as to do it again! Wake up at sunrise, surf and shoot till sunset, swimming, surfing, dolphins, turtles, bikinis… I’ve been to Tahiti and Fiji on photo shoots, so lucky!

©Julia Mcintosh Photography

3. Being a keen traveller you’ve been to more places than a lot of people could dream of, but is there anywhere in the world you’re desperate to visit and haven’t managed to yet?

A couple of places… I’ve always wanted to visit Cambodia, not for surf but more to see the history. I’d like to visit some more islands too, Hawaiian Islands, Philippines, Papua new Guinea….

4. How did the Wadi Adventure Park in Dubai compare to a real surf and what do you make of this new technology?

I LOVE the wavepark, honestly it’s insane. You won’t believe me until you have surfed it yourself. There is a wave every 90 seconds, and it’s guaranteed. It doesn’t matter about swell, wind, tide… plus the suns always shining and the waters warm. You can choose left, right, a frame or close out. It’s awesome! In a way it’s better than real surf, because you know EVERY wave you can get a couple turns and a cutty in, whereas free surfing I can go a week without this! But then again, nothing can produce the raw power and intensity that the ocean provides. Is this really surfing, or just riding waves? I personally love the technology, but understand some people might not like the idea of surfing becoming scripted, losing its adrenaline and unpredictability.

©Mark Harris (mark_nick@yahoo.com)

5. You’ve done some advertising for Lynx, so, much like the magnetic Lynx effect, if your deodorant could give you one power what would it be?

Teleport. Every time. Would be the coolest thing ever. Wake up, pop to Indo for a surf, home in time for Sunday roast!

6. Being one of the UK’s top female surfers, what do you have to say to any young aspiring Sophie Hellyers out there?

Haha, I don’t know. Some of the younger girls are ripping now… I saw Flora Lawton shredding at Croyde the other day. I just hope the girls remember to surf because they love surfing, and don’t let it become too much of a job or a competition about who has the best sponsors.

7. If you could design a surfboard which allowed you to surf and do one other thing at the same time, what would it be?

OOOO… there are so many things….! Maybe just a motor on it so I didn’t have to paddle as much haha.

8. If there was one item of clothing you could choose to model and bring back into fashion what would it be? Between me and you I’m desperate for someone to bring back the bumbag!

What are you on about, the bum-bag is already back! There’s nothing wrong with sporting a bum-bag. As with dungarees and tie dye!

©Adam Laister

Thanks to Sophie Hellyer, we wish you all the luck for next season!

We have been stocking Sector 9 longboards, skateboards and longboard gear for years now and yet they never fail to excite us. Each new model they come out with and each update they make to shape or construction is something we look forward to seeing and we know you do too. They have put a lot of work into researching their board designs and accessories, testing each new shape and evolution themselves to make sure that they are up to scratch for their riders and customers. As well as their boards, they have created a line of complementary accessories such as slider gloves and superb wheels to help you build a store of equipment that fits your style of riding.

Sector 9 has also invested heavily in their artwork. Each board they release is not only refined to perfection in terms of pure hardware, but is presented with artwork that is above and beyond a lot of the art you will see on other cruisers. As well as finding the artwork on the boards, Sector 9 have a section on their website dedicated to their artists which is well worth checking out. See below for a little taster of some of their work.

Specialising in skate longboards over skateboards, the shapes they have created and refined are designed for specific styles.

Sector 9 Cruisers

This style is coming to you straight from the beachfront boardwalks of California. Designed to roll easy without much flex, these are perfect for those who want to swoop and glide around looking like they own the place. Check out these models below and admit to yourself that you want few things in life more than cruising about a bright, wide boulevard on one of them.

Sector 9 Downhill

Of course, if you’re after speed and the sort of thrills that only a life threatening sport can bring then you want one of the Sector 9 longboards downhill boards. This style of board is designed to deliver a shot of adrenaline straight into your arteries. With cut-outs where a cruiser would have wheel arches, and a symmetrical shape to ride them any way you want to the downhill boards are made for fast turns and free style riding unencumbered by any notions of what you are “supposed” to do.

Sector 9 Protection

Of course, if you are going to skate hard, you need to get protected. Sector 9 are big fans of living to skate another day and so their protective gear and accessories are designed to be as high functioning as possible. They have gloves so when you’re screaming downhill you won’t tear your hands up when you touch off the ground in a slide. Their pads are seriously tough and their wheels will help you tackle any terrain and roll away unscathed. It takes more than just technical acumen to make skate gear this well, it takes passion too. It’s clear that Sector 9 have both of these elements in spades, and probably a little something extra at the same time.

Who Are Sector 9 Again?

Starting in La Jolla in California a few years ago, in a house where a group of friends were sleeping in between skating, snowboarding, surfing and generally having an awesome time, Sector 9 has grown into a massive company with products sold worldwide. Thanks to their fantastic location by some hills that led straight down to a cracking surf spot their house became a hub for their group of friends. Their name came from one of their friends who called everyone “Nineballs” and who phoned up the house looking to see if there was anything interesting happening that day. He left a message asking about what was happening at “Sector 9”. They had already got a few boards finished and were looking for a name for their new skate company and when they heard this message the name struck them as perfect and it stuck.

They’ve never given up on their free living philosophy, travelling about with their skate, snow and surfboards always looking for a sweet hill or perfect wave to get some action on.

Honestly, ask yourself what type of crew you want to be making your longboards and you’ll find that you answer “one exactly like the crew at Sector 9” each and every time.

If you’re running the London Marathon at the weekend then we salute you. If you’re running one in the future, then we salute you. If you’ve ever run more than a mile without stopping then we salute you too come to think of it. It’s a massive achievement to run a little over 42 kilometres in one session and not a commitment to be undertaken lightly.

The event began in the 1896 Olympics as a modern 42km run inspired by the legend of Pheidippides, an ancient Greek courier, who supposedly ran from Marathon to Athens to deliver news of a military victory. He made it, but collapsed at the end having delivered his message and who could blame him? He supposedly ran about 240km over the two previous days, so was probably a bit wrecked even before setting off on his journey.

His running gear probably didn’t help battle his fatigue and make his task any easier. Back then they didn’t even have proper arch support on their leather sandals. EVA footbeds were a long way off and moisture wicking fabrics were restricted to maybe dabbing yourself with the hem of a cloak. Actually, thinking about it, it’s quite likely Pheidippides was naked when he ran from Marathon to Athens all those years ago given the love of the Ancient Greeks for naked sports.

Modern day marathon runners are kitted up to the eyeballs with really fantastic and seriously advanced bits of kit. We’ve scoured the Surfdome site to select the gear we think would be most suited to helping you train and compete over a 42km race. Starting with clothes, we’ll move through shoes and accessories highlighting our range.

P.S. You’re going to be pretty fragile after completing your race. We recommend one of these to help start your recovery early and prevent further damage being done to your body.

P.S. Again. There are a lot of reasons to put yourself through a marathon. Of course, one that a lot of people have is to raise money for a charity. If you feel inclined to support someone going out of their way to make the run as difficult as possible for themselves to get some sponsorship then we know someone you may be interested in. Paul Bitmead is running the race whilst carrying a surfboard, an actual surfboard, in order to raise money for the Wave Project. They’re a group who work with young people, helping them to overcome difficult times and various problems through surfing. A cause very close to our hearts and an athletic feat that impresses even the most jaded runner coming together is too good to pass up. Find out more about Paul and donate at his donations page here.

Last week the first ever BRITS Championships was held in Tignes, France; a high altitude resort that teems with life, resembling a bustling town instead of a snow laden rural escape. Competitors came from all corners of the British Isles to face a gargantuan challenge in the shape of a 22-foot superpipe. Notable previous attempts had been made by world-renowned pipe riders during the X Games. The 2013 BRITS gave a talented selection of snowboarders and freeskiers their chance to face this titanic obstacle and battle it out in the hope of grabbing the attention of Olympic selectors.

Competitors faced the additional hindrance of adverse weather conditions on the day, which caused snow to clog up the transitions of the pipes, but all managed to overcome these environmental trials in style. Jaw dropping spectacles from snowboarders such as the gold medal winner Ben Kilner included Haakon flips and backside 5s. Silver medal achiever Dan Wakeham got the crowd going with a Crippler and McTwist, while last year’s winner Henry Shackleton finished his skilled display with a steezy seatbelt grab.

The female competition was equally as strong, with seasoned moves from silver medallist Kate Foster and bronze finalist Natalie Silkstone. These competitors put up a good fight with neat technical runs and some amazing grabs, such as the nose and tail, indie and method. However it was Katie Ormerod who finally walked away with the gold. Her exemplary execution of a frontside 5 and daring approach towards jumps gave this young shredder crowning glory in the end.

Stylish displays of skill were also offered by the GB Freeski Team, who gained prominence during the British Halfpipe Championships event. Murray Buchanan and veteran Em Lonsdale both claimed first prize, while Peter Speight and Rob Machon came in second and third respectively. Buchan was thrilled with his unexpected victory, saying, “I didn’t expect that much coming here straight from Spain and the World Cup. I was pretty tired and it’s been a long season so I’m really glad to win. I was wary of what Pete (Speight) might pull out of the bag so it was a tough competition and because I have been skiing with Pete all winter I knew what he was capable of so I was quite nervous to see what he had.” (taken from GB Free Ski).

Tignes and the BRITS have been praised by the competitors for the effort that had been put into hosting and creating such a memorable event. The games weren’t short of celebrity snow sport figures, which impressed the crowds, motivated the competitors and highlighted the increasing eminence of up and coming British snow sport talents. Who knows what Tignes will have in store for us in 2014, but if it’s anything like last week’s games, it’s bound to be incredible.
