Indio Surfboards are an offshoot of Pukas, and have been designed and built with the beginner to intermediate cohort in mind. The Endurance Epoxy construction certainly lends itself to use (and abuse) by less experienced surfers; so too the generous volume, wide outline and forgiving curves. That said, someone further towards the advanced end of the spectrum could still have a good time on the Rancho. It’s a nimble little shape and will respond well to more aggressive surfing; intermediates won’t be held back in their progression.
It’s kind of a shorter, stubbier version of the more versatile Racer model by Indio, and is better suited to small waves – if head-high surf and under is your bread and butter, the Rancho is the board for you. The nose is full and the wide-point still fairly far forward, but it carries its width and volume a little more evenly through the board. A fairly pronounced hip then brings the tail in sharply, reducing bulk, aiding manoeuvrability and improving the overall feel.
We’d recommend the Rancho as a great first or second shortboard, or as a super-fun summer board which intermediates can chuck about (maybe not literally) and lend to their mates without overly worrying. Less fit or less experienced surfers should go as big as possible for maximum float, stability and paddle power; otherwise order roughly as long as you are tall. It comes in a lovely grey-green cloudy finish.
