Item code: 239971

  • Construction: PU with 6oz x 6oz x 4 oz glass job
  • Outline: The classic outline that MR rode to multiple world titles. This board's a dream to paddle, with lots of area and volume forward of the mid-point, a pulled-in tail for hold through turns, and a straight-ish rail line providing additional drive.
  • Concave: Deep V bottom that encourages the board to flow easily from rail to rail. There’s also a slight channel or flute through the bottom of the wing that acts almost like an extra little fin on the rail
  • Rocker: Relatively flat retro rocker
  • Rails: Retro hard rails
  • Tail: Winged swallow
  • Fin Set-Up: Twin fin
  • Fin System: FCS II
  • Rider Ability: Intermediate to advanced
  • Suitable Conditions: 1-6ft and even bigger – MR used to ride this board in pretty much anything
Surfboards don’t get much more special or iconic than this. From 1979 to 1982, Australian surfer Mark Richards won four successive world titles riding a self-shaped surfboard. While most of his rivals were on surfboards that had just one fin, Richards’ boards had two.

The MR Retro Twin is shaped by Richards himself, and it’s an exact copy of the board he rode in competition from ’80 to ’82. This board was a slightly shorter and more streamlined version of his first world-title-winning model, with slightly more hold in good waves; Richards, who's 6'1", rode it at 6’2” x 20 1/4” x 2 3/4”. After winning again in 1980 he continued to tinker with the design, but nothing he added or subtracted made it go any better – it was already perfect, so he left it as it was.

Here it is some 35 years later, still unchanged and still going as good as ever. Of the various twin-fin models Richards has come up with over the years, he still considers this one the best all-rounder. You can surf it when it’s 2ft and it goes brilliantly, the width and volume under your chest getting you effortlessly into those smaller waves; you can surf it at 6ft and it goes just as well, with the reduced swallow tail giving the board excellent holding power on bigger faces and through turns.

It was the most popular of his boards at the time, and has proved by far the most popular of his current retro series of boards. Here’s your chance to own a board that literally changed the course of surfing history, then, but also one that surfs amazingly well, and still holds up from a performance point of view after all these years. Needless to say the boards are absolutely stunning, with the instantly recognisable Superman-style logo in black on the red, blue and yellow deck.
