  • Neoprene: E5, which remains the premium material in the Rip Curl range
  • Lining: E5 Flash lining throughout the suit's interior – one of the most sophisticated linings in the wetsuit world
  • Entry: Chest zip
  • Seam Construction: Full internal taping with E5 Flash lining tape, so there's no break in the lining and you get a seal that's comfortable and quick-drying as well as tight
  • Extras: Mesh (smoothskin) chest and back panels, with liquid neoprene seals on the cuffs, keeping flushing to a minimum round wrists and ankles
  • Temperature Guide: 6 - 13°C

When the Flashbomb first exploded onto the scene several years ago, its incredible moisture-wicking abilities left rival wetsuit designers reeling. Since then it has only gotten better – warmer, lighter, stretchier, more robust.

The centrepiece is the Flash lining, whose double-layered construction wicks water away with unrivalled efficiency, then funnels it out of the suit. It's this tech that makes the Flashbomb the fastest-drying wetsuit in the world – if the prospect of pulling on a soggy wetsuit on a cold morning fills you with terror, this is the suit for you. The lining is equally hard at work when you're actually wearing it; by absorbing less water it remains light and low-profile, and yet it still does a great job of keeping you insulated.

As for the neoprene itself, E5 is a stretchier (+30%) and lighter (-20%) version of their older E4, and yet still manages (in Rip Curl's estimation) to be 10% warmer. Rip Curl recently brought out an E6 neoprene, which is newer but not necessarily "better" – it's more focussed on stretch than on warmth. As such it's used in the E-Bomb but not the Flashbomb, which is a heavier-duty suit and a more well-rounded one.

If you want to surf better for longer in aggressively cold water, and you don't want to compromise on price, the Flashbomb demands your consideration. One of the best winter wetsuits on the market without question.
