Our best-selling performance softboard of 2019 is back, and it’s now available in three epic new colour options – grey, green, and an almost ghostly white, so stealthy you can barely see it. That's as well as the original blue and red design. Let’s be honest they look rad, with the signature Flash marbled finish providing additional panache.
They also look heaps of fun. The generously proportioned nose and front half will provide amazing float and paddle power and glide, which is what you need to squeeze all available speed and squirt out of sub-par summer swells. Then the hip and pulled-in tail come into play, enabling much tighter, more critical turns than you might have been expecting.
This year there’s a new size in the range. Joining the 5’0”, 5’7”, 6’0” and 6’6” already on the roster is a 7’0” – basically a mid-length or a mini-mal, and a much more suitable option for beginners.
The smaller sizes are geared towards more experienced surfers, though at 32 litres even the 5’0” has a decent amount of volume. You’ll want to ride it a good 6 inches shorter than your normal shortboard, and if its maximum shredability you’re after then the shorter the better. The EG Flash is also a brilliant board for groms – depending on experience and ability, look to order as long as they are tall or up to a foot longer.
Softech are the original softboard specialists, and these things are built to withstand some serious shorebreak punishment. The double-stringer foam blank is made of X-Density Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), which is 100% waterproof so won’t be letting in water and getting weighed down. Likewise the double-sided slick (the bottom panel, made of high-density polyethylene) keeps weight and bulk to a minimum and makes this board as quick and nimble as possible.
The Softech EG Flash is the signature model of stylish Floridian regularfoot Eric Geiselman – watch him put it through its paces in the clips below, it’s mental what’s possible on a soft-top! With the EG Flash you really do get a level of performance that’s not too far away from a standard hard-shell shortboard, plus of course all the low-stress convenience and carefree fun that makes softboard construction so appealing.
