Surf Road Trip Survival Guide

Autumn in the UK and Europe is one of the best times to do a surf road trip, the water's still fairly warm and the swell is more consistent, with one of the slowest summer's for a few years in terms of surf there will be plenty of engines revving up for the first decent North Atlantic swell.

If you're heading away this season let us share a few tips on surviving based on our experiences here at MSW HQ.

Wherever you end up heading there's a good chance the water's going to be a different temperature than your home break.

If you're heading North check out our selection of winter wetsuits and accessories, adding a hooded polypro top to your usual wetsuit can give you a great option for that Scottish trip.

Southward bound surfers are more likely to need some sun protection, we'd go for a gel or zinc based sun block if you're going to be maximising your water time. It will go on thick and not wash off during a session, keeping you protected.

If you've got your wetsuit and boots or boardies and rashie sorted out you'll want to think about what you're going to be riding on the trip. If you're like us you're travelling to take on waves you wouldn't usually encounter. Whether it's Irish slabs, Moroccan points or French shorebreaks, you'll need a board or set of fins that suit your destination, and if you already have one a spare set is worth considering too.

The Doofer is simply an awesome all rounder. Whether you're an experienced surfer or a beginner stepping off a foamie, riding 1 foot windy mush to pumping 6ft slabs, this board will excel. Plus, it's a solid bargain at £479.99.

A road trip allows you the freedom to get off the beaten track, great for uncrowded line ups but not so good when you damage equipment with no means of repair or replacement.

Repair Kit Spare Leash Wax
There is nothing worse than damaging your board and having no means to fix it resulting in staying ashore while your mates score. Make sure this never happens with a handy travel repair kit that can cope with the majority of situations. A spare leash is a surf trip must, Even in small waves you never know when it may come in handy. If you are expecting to be surfing bigger waves it's worth considering a leash 7/8mm thick. Wax to match the temperature of the water you are surfing can make all the difference between sticking that super late drop and not and without a surf shop is near enough impossible to come by so stock up!
