Don’t be a grump – we had a summer that southern Spain would have been proud of. Granted, the surf was poo (standard) and there was no snow (duh it’s summer) but we know we can’t always score the good stuff. But If the concrete’s your playground – you most likely will have worn down your skate wheels to the bolts. The soaring temperatures and blue skies created all time skateboarding conditions and we hope you made the most of it.
Therefore we now encourage you now to take a moment, close your eyes and reminisce of all those good times because now it’s set to all go down the bog…The classroom beckons.
We promise you, even the biggest boffin in your class and the teachers themselves get that gut-wrenching feeling of their freedom slipping away as you approach the first day back at school. Maybe we’re being melodramatic or have some physiological school issues…But we promise you the world is going to end when summer is over…. So what are you going to do?
This is what you’re going to do. You’re going to read this incredible, informative guide to help you tackle school the best way possible.
Social Media = All the Action Sports News You Need
We probably shouldn’t suggest this (we don’t want irate teachers sending angry tweets to us) so make sure you don’t get caught. But social media is awesome. You can keep up to date and follow the latest news and adventures of your favourite sports and athletes so you’re never out of the loop.
Skating to & from school
One thing we did learn at school is free time is like gold. So whenever you have an opportunity to ride, make sure you ride. If you have this option, ditch the bus or mum’s car. Get out your skateboard (and your protective gear) and cruise it to school Bart Simpson style.
Sneaky School Style
Ties, blazers and those itchy jumpers. School uniform sucks and nobody wants to look like a herd of sheep. To take on this problem you need to use your noggin. Backpacks are often a way to help you define your own style as it’s an easy one to get away with. Accessories like hats and watches can easily be tucked away when those pesky teachers are lurking.
If you’re brave, want to take a risk and have teachers who have terrible eyesight – you might be able to get away with black skate shoes like the Vans Authentic Lo Pro (but you didn’t get this idea here ok!).
Books don’t have to be boring:
We suppose books and reading are a big part of school life. So this is what we recommend you read:
– The Mutt: How to Skateboard and Not Kill Yourself by Rodney Mullen
– Surf Science: An Introduction to Waves for Surfing by Tony Butt
– Riding the Magic Carpet by Tom Anderson
– Snowboarding the World by Matt Barr
Projects on Passion:
This point is relevant to everyone. Life’s too short to do stuff that you don’t like, so we’d recommend trying to spice up some of your school work by relating it to the sports you love. For example, here’s a few:
– A science project on how waves are created
– A geography project on how the world’s best snow spots were made
– Physics project on ‘How does Shaun White do it?’
– A business case study on one of your favourite brands (eg. The Rise of Rip Curl)
– Wood work (do kids still do this?) We’re not sure, but if you do… make a skate ramp!
– Art class is an easy one! Find inspiration in the sports you love and create a master piece!
Get your school on board:
If you can do this, you’re sure to survive going back to school. Surfing, snowboarding and skateboarding are sports, art, lifestyles and also industries. The action sports world provides many lessons and development in different ways so it can bring a fantastic aspect to the school environment. Hammer this home to your teachers and strive for your school to embrace it. Surf, skate and snow lessons in PE and your school trips – sounds pretty sweet doesn’t it?
