It’s been a crazy week for the J Bay Open, we’ve all seen the video of Mick Fanning embracing his inner Tyson and thumping a shark in the back. What people haven’t seen however, is that amongst the chaos and beneath the heavy undertones of relief sat Derek Hynd. 58 years young, the one-eyed legend saw the opportunity to surf the near empty lineup in the wake of the panic. Sporting an 11ft 6″ finless shape the man that was once Occy’s coach paddled out to find himself amidst six foot of bliss.
..Meanwhile back on shore emotions ran high as Fanning and Wilson took a deep breath.
