Introducing our new Ambassador – Longboarder, surf coach and ice cream maker from Cornwall, Samantha Sunshine! We are so stoked to have Samantha join the Surfdome team! We recently got back from our team Surf trip to Morocco, where we got to spend 5 days with this total ray of sunshine (so true to her name) so we thought we’d have a sit down for an exclusive interview, so you guys can get to know all about our newest rider!

Tell us a little about you, your life, job, passions:
Sunshine: I’m Samantha Sunshine, a surfer from Newquay in Cornwall. You’ll usually find me on my 9ft longboard with a big smile on my face! I love to share my surf stoke with others, by working freelance as a surf coach for one of the best women’s surf camps – Surf Sistas! It’s the best feeling to be able to share the joy that surfing gives me, watching it take ahold of people, and empowering women learning to surf in a male dominated sport.

What inspires you:

Sunshine: My inspirations are drawn from everywhere…Waking up in the morning and seeing the sun shining, people who are kind and have time for everyone, and those who smile in and out the water! I’m also very fond of Leah Dawson’s inspirational words to ‘surf like a woman’.

When did you start surfing?

Sunshine: I first jumped In the ocean with a board around 10 years ago, it was New Year’s Day and after that, I was completely hooked on it! It was like nothing I had ever felt before, a curious mixture of falling in love and feeling 7 again…I still feel like that.

Where is your local break/favourite places to surf:

Sunshine: You’ll usually find me surfing in Newquay at Watergate, Fistral or the Bay. I have travelled all over the world to surf, but I would still say Cornwall is my favourite! Mainly as it’s such a social occasion, it’s so special to be able to surf with so many friends, especially when the conditions are perfect.

What is your favourite thing about surfing?

Sunshine: If I had to name just one thing I would be stuck! I just love the whole experience of paddling out, catching beautiful waves, getting a magical nose ride and seeing my friends and others get good waves too! These are some of my favourite things, I love it all! It always feels like a celebration, just like that feeling you get at Christmas! I feel incredibly lucky to have made the life I’ve got.

What are some of your favourite pieces from Surfdome currently?  

Sunshine: I got to surf the Maluku – Flying Frog, Eco board when we were in Immsouane, and even though it wasn’t a longboard, it surfed like a dream! I also love the SWELL Rose Belle Playsuit, it’s been so good for the summer and all the hot weather we’ve been having! I also love the SWELL  Noa Low Back Swimsuit, it has such a nice cactus print and I’m a swimsuit lover!

What are your plans for this Summer:

Sunshine: I’m excited to say I will be entering Boardmasters this year, competing in my first ever Longboard Qualifying Series Contest! So I’m going to be busy training for that, and I’m really excited to meet all the incredible female longboarders who are entering too! (keep an eye on Instagram @samanthasunshineandthesea to see what I get up to) Peak season is also about to kick down here in Cornwall, so I will be doing a lot of surf coaching with Surf Sistas, as well as teaching some longboard specific surf camp days in Newquay! Also hopefully my summer will be filled with lots more BBQs, surfing and camping with friends too!
