The next generation and marine plastic

The next generation and marine plastic

The One
At Surfdome, we are serious about sustainability. We’ve worked hard to eliminate plastic packaging from our business, now in our 2nd year we have taken 30 tonnes out of circulation. From this moment onwards, we’re also serious about educating on the subject too!
Many of you will be aware of the work we do with Photographer Tim Nunn and The Plastic Project. The global plastic issue isn’t going away by itself, so we decided to team up with education social enterprise – A Tale Unfolds to produce a classroom resource for 7-11 year olds to research and solve the problem.
Plastic pollution
Called ‘The Plastic Times’,  children will study exclusive news content captured by CNN, shockingly showing how the plastic we discard every hour is washing up on the idyllic Midway Atoll, in the Pacific Ocean, even ending up inside birds and who unwittingly swallow it as food.
As well as CNN’s content, pupils will use The Plastic Projects amazing video footage from places like the Lofoten Islands to produce their very own news report in their English lessons. Rather than just report the problem, schools will also be challenged to create innovative ideas which can help us solve the issue. Our approach at Surfdome, to remove single use plastic packaging, will be one example that students can use, another is Bureo Skateboards who use recycled discarded fishings nets to make their skate decks.

The project is part of the Schools Film Festival – featuring short movies written, edited, performed and filmed entirely by primary school pupils – which comes to Britain’s biggest cinema screen on June 19th 2017. School video submissions will premier at the British Film Institute IMAX cinema in Waterloo, London, allowing pupils to see their films showcased on the 20 x 26 metre wide screen.

The marine plastic crisis needs to be tackled from all angles. Cutting the flow of plastic to the Oceans through industry change, cleaning the beaches with our #2MinuteBeachClean and getting as many young minds as possible to turn the crisis into an opportunity for generations to come!
