Wednesday July 1st saw not only the second hottest day in Parisian record, but also the launch of the Volcom Bastille Days custom skate structure at ‘Place De La Bastille‘. The concrete park which is styled to provide a real plaza vibe was designed and created by the same guys behind BaySixty6 in London’s Ladbroke Grove and the Skatepark of Amsterdam (so you know you’re in good hands). The spot is open to the public and will be hosting a string of events over the next two months, ending on September 6th.

The afternoon kicked off with the official opening courtesy of the the Paris city council, three of the surrounding districts mayors were on hand to give the spot their almighty blessing (a refreshing contrast from most city councils!). Once all the speeches had been completed and all the formalities had been dismissed, the floodgates were opened and the eager Parisian locals were unleashed upon the spot for a sunshine laden session.

Kids from all over Paris and a few from cities just outside the capital (at least that what I think they said.. My French isn’t top notch) had made their way down to meet the team, hopefully win some gear and get to meet & shred with their heroes. David Gonzalez was on hand to sign literally anything the groms threw at him. We also managed to interview him on the day, so watch this space – It’s coming soon!

For those who were were in need of a break from the super sweaty 38°C session and those who had turned up to show their support, the shade offered activities for all. Featuring Volcom DIY stations where you were able to turn your hand at screen printing your own t-shirt, customising your own hat or pressing your own badges – there was literally something for everyone to get involved with.

With the spot being skated pretty thoroughly by all who hit it, all eyes fell on the team. The guys had been chilling on the sidelines, but now it was time to get down to the demo and stir up a little chaos. There were some bangers thrown down from names such as David Gonzalez, Eniz Fazliov, Axel Cruysberghs, Victor Pellegrin and Vincent Coupeau. Unfortunately Dustin Dollin wasn’t skating and Chris Pfanner  along with Harry Lintell were out with injuries, but the rest of the team did them a solid by holding down the fort and putting on a demo that rivalled the heat.

Last but not least, they days skate events came to an end with the “Trick 4 Trick” session. Organised by Electric, skaters were challanged to land the same tricks that the Electric team riders were landing. David Gonzalez and Sam Partaix laid down the foundations for the budding thrashers to match. The competition was rife and the determination was visible and with the blatant abundance of steeze coming from everyone who took part, I’m glad I wasn’t judging.

As the sun started to set over Paris, the days events were tied up with music and in true skate style.. many, many drinks. Although the event was “officially” over, the session was still going in to the wee hours of the night, with the local rippers giving the spot their best.
The next Volcom Bastille Days event scheduled at Place de La Bastille will be on  Sunday July 12th head down at 7PM for an instalment of photos from De Paris yearbookmusic, drinks and the screening of the video “Deuxième Vague”. As with all events coming up here, it’s FREE!
