Friday 28th September saw the annual Waterman’s Ball take place in the heart of Europe’s surf industry in Hossegor, France.
The event was organised by EuroSIMA, the European boardsports industry manufacturers association, to raise money for sustainable projects and with aims to federate the boardsports industry.
Hello Sailors
Hello sailors
It brought together business hot shots, top athletes and iconic sea dogs with a ‘sailor’ dress code.
It was also the perfect setting for the EuroSIMA Industry Awards. Honouring and celebrating the companies, individual athletes and stalwarts that have propelled the boardsports industry forward.
Awards
The loot
The Innovation Prize  – A panel of gurus chose the superb FlashBomb from Rip Curl. First hand experience; it’s light, non-restrictive and dries ridiculously quick. Get it if you can. Can’t wait to see if they manage to make it better.
Performance Brand – Quiksilver swooped this for the 2011-2012 season. Always at the forefront, always pushing things forward.
European Surf Ad Campaign of the Year – Taken with creative aplomb by Nixon for their ‘Archives’ advertising campaign.
European Athlete of the Year – Antoine Delpero. We loved this. The Marseilles-born Oxbow athlete has been outstanding on the longboarding and stand-up paddle world tours. Truly elite and a former world champion, it was great to see him get recognition on home turf.
Lifetime Achievement Award – Maurice Cole. A surfing pioneer and absolutely masterful shaper. Well travelled across the oceans with over 40 years experience in the craft. A legend, rightly rewarded.
Maurice Cole
The man himself. Maurice Cole.
Surfdome pillars Phil Power and Jo O’Brien were our representatives among the 250 attendees. Our Head of Equipment Phil, recently featured in Shortlist magazine for his expertise, said of the event:
‘It was particularly inspiring to hear EuroSima President Fred Basse’s enthusiasm for the boardsport’s industry in the upcoming seasons. With participation levels in grass roots events ever increasing, there is great reason to share Fred’s optimism.
Our congratulations also goes out to Wilco and the Rip Curl wetsuits team for their innovation award for the Flash Bomb wetsuit.
The lifetime achievement awarded to Australian shaper and surfer pioneer, Maurice Cole, reaffirmed that board sports can be an adventure, as much as a way of life.’
