Wanna go fast?! If speed and spark are what you’re after, particularly in sluggish and/or sub-par surf, the latest model to come out of Pyzel HQ is the board you’ve been waiting for. “Funformance" is the category Jon Pyzel's advised us to file the Astro Pop under, and we reckon it could be a classic of the genre.
The Astro Pop simply oozes retro steez. A flattish rocker and beaked nose provide tremendous paddle power, but don’t mistake this board for a one-dimensional groveller: its playful temperament is combined with an appetite for serious shredding.
The dimensions are actually reasonably slender (see below), and the wing in the tail adds some curve to the outline for a tighter turning arc. When the wave slows down, the double concave through to vee will get you up on top of the water, but will also enable quick and easy rail-to-rail transitions when you’re travelling at pace (which we guarantee you will be).
As Pyzel explains in the vid below, what that vee through the fins and out the tail also does is increase the rocker curve along the rail line, loosening up the tail and giving the board a much more responsive, high-performance feel. Crucially though it does this without compromising the flatter rocker profile along the stringer, and so maintains high planing speeds. Some fish style boards or grovellers paddle great, catch waves easily and go pretty fast in a straight line, but feel like dogs when you try and go from rail to rail and surf them more dynamically. Not the Astro Pop.
It's designed to be ridden short, but you should aim for slightly more volume than your regular shortboard, with half an inch to an inch extra width. If you're buying the Astro Pop as a first shortboard – which isn't a bad idea – then order more conservatively and get one of the larger sizes.
Jon Pyzel recommends riding the Astro Pop as a quad for speed purposes, but the five-fin set-up (with Futures fin boxes à la John John) gives you the thruster option (or cheeky 2 + 1?) for maximum versatility. Featuring custom coloured-in rails with a green-to-yellow fade.
